Smoke Alarms and Virginia Landlord Tenant Law

Why are smoke alarms so important?

Every year in the United States, approximately 2,000 people lose their lives in residential fires. Most fire victims die from inhalation of smoke and toxic gases, not from burns. A majority of fatal fires happen when families are asleep due to occupants not being aware of the fire until there is not adequate time to escape.

Smoke alarms work and guard your home around the clock. These alarms are loud enough and provided you that key, but limited, time to escape. The Pointe Realty Group Property Management Division ensures that each rental we manage has up-to-date smoke alarms.

What to Expect?

Due to the new Virginia Landlord Tenant Law, we are now required to certify all smoke alarms in all residential properties that we manage. Inspectors will ensure that smoke alarms are in each bedroom, ingress/egress areas, and on each level of the home.  Smoke detectors must be less than 10 years old and they will replace any defective alarms and install any that are missing. Keep an eye out for more information regarding this.
